Storm P – The Danish Museum of Humour and Satire

The Storm P. Museum has very appropriately called itself the Museum of Humour and Satire. Which is befitting the name which graces the Museum – Robert Storm Petersen. Throughout the first half of the 20th century Storm P. as he was always called, was one of the leading cartoonist, actor and humorous essayist.
His drawings and cartoons graced the Dailies for decades and his “Heath Robinson” contraptions, where an Elephant could easily be incorporated in a Mouse trap, where legendary and a constant source of innocent amusement for young and old alike. Yet despite this, Storm P. was also an engaged and concerned humanist. In the spirit of Charlie Chaplin. many of his paintings and drawings elegantly and efficiently lifted the veil of human incondition in a modern industrialised society. Thus philosophical bonne mots from vagabonds and tramps were a common theme.

His life, his contemporaries and his artistic work portrayed in sound, photographs, films and newspaper clips – and of course with numerous examples of his versatile and diverse production – from the colorful and expressionistic watercolors and oil paintings of the famous and beloved cartoons, philosophical flies and drawn shapes. In addition to preserving and disseminating Storm Ps life and ministry responsible for the museum at the national level the Danish tradition of humour and satire in the art, the role of the museum audience including can experience through temporary exhibitions and dissemination activities.

Storm P’s illustrations are all about being human and the human condition, and this pearl of a small museum perched in the suburbs of Copenhagen, reveals a picture of a unique Danish artist, who even today can make us look at ourselves and make us laugh.
