This brooch from Lindholm Høje, near Ålborg is from the Viking Age, c. 1000 AD. The motif is a good example of the late Viking Age animal style. The large animal fighting the snake is a symbol of the struggle between good and evil. The interlacing animal ornamentation is called the Urnes style, named after the decorations on Norway’s oldest stave church in Urnes. The original jewelry is exhibited at Aalborg Historical Museum.
