Snowlandscape with Roedeer Print by Johannes Larsen.
The famous author Johannes V. Jensen and the painter Johannes Larsen wanted to produce a book celebrating the passing of the year in Denmark. Nature meant a great deal to Johannes Larsen. Both in his artistic capacity, as well as in his daily life, and in his interest in hunting and wildlife in general. Over a two month period Johannes Larsen produced no less than 128 small water colours set to short poems by Johannes V. Jensen.
In this spirit the great painter built his villa in one of the most beautiful places in Kerteminde, with a spectacular view of the Great Belt, where he could keep track of the changing colours of the sea and sky. A large garden perched on the old Mill hill, where there were already mature trees and shrubs, and where John Larsen created and developed several ponds, to maintain an abundance of bird life.
John Larsen was known as bird painter, but all animals interested him, and has also painted hares, deer, cats, otters, etc. throughout his life. At one point he had a tame otter named Jokumsen, and he bought two mute swans in a zoo in Hamburg, which have since lived in the garden. The crowning glory being the peacock Harald, who graced the garden at Mill Hill.
However, it was by no means a nostalgic outlook of nature, which dominated the painter's profound understanding of nature. It was a sober and sometimes scientific mode of interest in the seasonal changes and its impact on wildlife. He was an early advocate of nature preservation, and was for 30 years president of the local Danish Natural Preservation department.
